Mrs. Curwen often mentioned her desire for children to have music in front of them that is well written for their small hands. This 1st Solo Album is her compilation of pieces of music she felt suited the needs for children. They were pieces written simply for the beauty of music, yet they were written with children in mind.
For thorough instructions, Mrs. Curwen addresses how to use the 1st Solo Album in an appendix in the back of her Teacher’s Guide. Look for the appendix titled “Notes on Recreative Music.” You will see a general overview initially, but Mrs. Curwen then goes on to address pertinent qualities specific to each piece in the album. It’s quite helpful as you work your way through the 1st Solo Album.
The 1st Solo Album begins with short passages in the front of the book. These short passages are condensed excerpts of full pieces of music. Once a child can play the short passage well, you know they have all the skills they need to conquer the corresponding piece of music that follows.
