Preliminary Lesson 3a

Preparation

What to know prior to watching the student video:

I introduce intervals in this lesson. If you, as a parent, are not familiar with this term as it relates to music, I’d recommend listening along. Mrs. Curwen uses the concept of an interval a lot in her method of teaching piano.

I also show the student a metronome. A metronome is a tool that keeps a steady pulse for a musician that can be used while practicing. You can find relatively inexpensive ones on Amazon. Or, you can access one simply by entering ‘metronome’ into google.

It’d be good to have one accessible during the lesson for your child to use.

After Lesson 3a:

Because of the nature of these lessons, I can’t watch your student to see if they growing in their identification of sounds and their names.

I’m going to be asking your child to be naming the sounds on the piano at a faster rate. If this is still difficult, sit down with them at the piano. Simply play a sound and ask them to identify it. Remind them to use the black keys to help figure out which sound is being played.

If they don’t use the black keys and have a different plan of their own, that’s just as good too!

Lesson 3a Homework

  1. Practice naming the sounds on the piano. Start low and go up in thirds naming the sounds. Start high and go down in thirds naming the sounds.
  2. Find intervals of seconds and thirds on the piano. Play them using all the fingerings.
  3. Practice singing one pulse and two pulse sounds.
