Preliminary Lesson 3b

Preparation

What to know prior to watching the student video:

Take note that this video is on the shorter side finishing around 15 minutes. Most other lessons are around 20 minutes.

Learning the names of the sounds may be feeling redundant right now. We have this lesson and one more to nail down the names of the sounds. Remember that laying a good and strong foundation will mean great accomplishment and satisfaction. They’ll be exercising this knowledge of the sounds with notation soon!

After Lesson 3b:

I introduced a song called The Farmhouse to the student today. Since they cannot read music at this point, I’m teaching it by rote. Learning this song may be fun, but it is completely optional. Mrs. Curwen encouraged rote playing during the Preliminary Lessons only if the child was interested.

Lesson 3b Homework

  1. Practice naming the sounds on the piano coming down in thirds.
  2. Find intervals of seconds and thirds on the piano. Play them using all the fingerings.
  3. Using a metronome, practice singing one pulse and two pulse sounds.
  4. Practice playing The Farmhouse.
