Preliminary Lesson 4b

Preparation

What to know prior to watching the student video:

This lesson ended up being really, really long. I believe it will take a student close to 35 minutes to complete the entire lesson. I’d encourage you to break up this lesson into two separate days.

All of Preliminary Lesson 4 is the foundation of notation. The student has learned all about the sounds on the piano and their names. How do we write those sounds down? How does the staff work and why? This is what we’re learning in Lesson 4. It’s the basis of reading music.

Lesson 4b Homework

  1. Draw a staff of 11 lines. Label middle C, high F, and low G. Play these sounds on the piano.
  2. Write out some measures with three or four pulses. Fill in the measures with one, two, or three pulse notes.
  3. Continue playing through The Farmhouse.
